Jim Larranaga remarked on the changing landscape of college basketball, stating, "What shocked me beyond belief was after we made it to the Final Four just 18 months ago, eight of my players decided to enter the portal and leave. I was taken aback; these were players who claimed they loved it here. But with the opportunity to make money elsewhere, they had to consider what this was really about."
During his retirement announcement, Larranaga explained, "I know I'm gonna be asked a lot of questions, but I want to answer them before I'm even asked. I feel like I'm exhausted from having to constantly navigate things like the transfer portal. This game means so much to me, yet I can't commit 100% anymore, both physically and emotionally. That's why I’ve decided to step away."
