UNICEF reveals nearly 250 million kids missed school in 2024. Here's why
Briefly

A recent UNICEF report revealed that over 242 million children in 85 countries experienced educational interruptions in 2024 due to extreme weather events linked to climate change. This amounted to one in seven school-going children globally affected by climate hazards, with notable impacts in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Countries like Italy and Spain faced significant flooding, disrupting the schooling of hundreds of thousands. Notably, heat waves emerged as the main climate challenge, leading to widespread school closures. The report emphasizes children's unique vulnerability to climate-related crises, underscoring the need for urgent action.
"Children are more vulnerable to the impacts of weather-related crises, including stronger and more frequent heat waves, storms, droughts, and flooding," said UNICEF executive director Catherine Russell.
"The earth recorded its hottest year ever, and heat waves were the predominant climate hazard shuttering schools last year," according to the UNICEF report.
