Volker Turk, the UN human rights chief, expressed alarm over the rising conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) during a Human Rights Council meeting, emphasizing the need for urgent action to prevent a broader regional crisis. Following the recent seizure of Goma by M23 fighters, Turk noted a critical risk of escalating violence not only in eastern Congo but also across neighboring areas. Concerns include significant human rights abuses and weapons proliferation, prompting calls for international investigations into these abuses, particularly sexual violence. The situation remains volatile, with tensions between Congo and Rwanda intensifying.
If nothing is done, the worst may be yet to come, for the people of the eastern DRC, but also beyond the country's borders.
The risk of violence escalating throughout the sub-region has never been higher. All those with influence must act urgently to put an end to this tragic situation.
I am very concerned about weapons proliferation in the region. The UN is investigating allegations of rape, gang rape, and sexual slavery in eastern Congo.
Rwanda's ambassador alleged that Rwanda was responding to an imminent threat from Congo, categorically opposing Congo's claims against Rwanda.
