A Baku court has sentenced Azerbaijani political commentator Nazakat Mammadova to 13 years in prison on charges of spying for Russia, amid accusations of political motivations behind the case.
Mammadova has rejected all charges, maintaining that her visits to Russia were for conferences and that payments received were simply for travel expenses, not espionage.
The Committee to Protect Journalists described the charges against Mammadova as "fabricated" and "politicized," highlighting the trend of imprisoning journalists in Azerbaijan for dissenting views.
Azerbaijani authorities allege that Mammadova used her journalist credentials to collaborate with Russian intelligence, claiming her YouTube content was overtly pro-Russian, a serious indictment in the region.
