UK-France travel: Eurostar orders double-deck trains for first time
"The Alstom Avelia Horizon trains are 200m long with two decks - although double-decker trains are common in France they have never been used on UK railways, with the exception of a brief experiment in 1949. Eurostar's chief executive Gwendoline Cazenave told the BBC that she was "particularly proud to bring double-decker trains to the UK for the very first time", adding they would bring "exceptional comfort"."
"Eurostar merged in 2023 with Thalys, and it is the ex-Thalys trains that operate only in Continental Europe that are most in need of replacement. It has 9,200m long PBA trains, and 17,200m long PBKA trains in that fleet, so 26 trains in total. The order of 30 200m long Avelia Horizon is just basically replacing the ex-Thalys fleet, with an extra route Amsterdam-Geneva also to be worked on."
Eurostar has ordered 30 Alstom Avelia Horizon double-decker trains with an option for 20 additional units. The trains measure 200m and feature two decks; double-decker trains are common in France but have not been used on UK railways aside from a 1949 experiment. Eurostar carried 19.5 million passengers last year and aims to grow to 30 million. Deployment of the new trains on UK cross-Channel services is uncertain, with older ex-Thalys continental trains likely to be replaced first. Eurostar merged with Thalys in 2023 and plans an £80m investment to develop the Temple Mills depot to enable expanded services and competition.
