"I request the (government) of Uganda to release my husband Dr, Kizza Besigye, from where he is being held immediately," stated Winnie Byanyima, his wife.
"I am now reliably informed that he is in a military jail in Kampala," Byanyima elaborated, emphasizing his civilian status and seeking immediate access to Besigye.
Besigye, a trained physician and initial ally of Museveni, has transformed into a leading critic, contesting against him in multiple elections.
The Museveni government has faced accusations regarding human rights abuses, particularly targeting opposition figures while supporters fear detention and possible torture.
