The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) arrested two officers amid a fraud investigation linked to payments made following a significant data breach in August 2023, where sensitive information of 9,483 officers was mistakenly published online. To mitigate safety concerns, each officer was offered £500 for personal security, which 90% accepted. The PSNI's Anti-Corruption Unit is conducting the investigation, and concurrent misconduct reviews are underway for the involved officers, reflecting the service's commitment to ethical standards and officer safety.
The August 2023 data breach had a significant impact on many of our officers, staff, and their families. From the outset, we sought to provide them with the best possible support.
The 'universal offer' of £500 per officer/staff member was intended to allow officers and staff to take practical steps to provide security and reassurance.
Following an investigation by our Anti-Corruption Unit, two officers have been arrested, interviewed, and bailed for fraud offenses relating to the universal offer.
The public rightly expect police officers to uphold the highest ethical standards, and any misconduct will be thoroughly investigated.
