Housing policy and immigration researchers warn that mass deportations planned by Donald Trump could severely hinder recovery efforts in Los Angeles by worsening the housing shortage.
Data indicates that immigrants constitute a significant portion of California's construction workforce, which is already facing shortages, further exacerbated by potential deportation threats.
"When Trump is sworn in, there will be a chilling effect. We don't know how big it will be, but it is 100% certain that there will be fewer undocumented folks showing up at the job lines to try and get on construction jobs," said Ben Metcalf.
According to housing policy researchers and economists, the recent wildfire destruction will compound California's already dire housing shortage, which was estimated to be short by approximately 337,000 homes.
