President Trump's proposal for Egypt and Jordan to accept Palestinians from Gaza, largely homeless due to the conflict, was met with firm rejections from at least Jordan. The Palestinian Authority and Hamas condemned the suggestion, fearing it would affect Palestinians’ rights to return home. Trump's remarks came amidst discussions of rebuilding Gaza after extensive destruction caused during the conflict with Hamas, which has seen significant casualties and displacement. The proposal has drawn criticism, being perceived as a potential step towards ethnic cleansing according to human rights organizations.
Human rights groups have already accused Israel of ethnic cleansing, which United Nations experts have defined as a policy designed by one ethnic or religious group to remove the civilian population of another group from certain areas "by violent and terror-inspiring means."
Jordan's foreign minister, Ayman Safadi, told journalists that his country's rejection of the proposed transfer of Palestinians was "firm and unwavering."
Hamas and the Palestinian Authority condemned the idea. Trump’s proposal, if implemented, would amount to an alarming escalation in the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.
Trump floated the idea on Saturday, saying he would urge the leaders of the two Arab countries to take in Gaza's now largely homeless population, so that "we just clean out that whole thing."
