Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 29, 2025, to prepare a detention facility at Guantanamo Bay capable of housing up to 30,000 migrants. This expansion involves utilizing an existing migrant facility at the controversial location, which has faced criticism for previous allegations of torture and unlawful detention practices. The facility, managed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), is intended to hold what Trump describes as the "worst criminal illegal aliens." Human rights groups like Amnesty International have condemned this plan, advocating for the closure of Guantanamo rather than its repurposing for immigration enforcement.
Today, I'm signing an executive order to instruct the departments of defence and homeland security to begin preparing the 30,000-person migrant facility at Guantanamo Bay.
Guantanamo Bay has been the site of torture, indefinite detention without charge or trial and other unlawful practices by the U.S. government. President Trump should be using his authority to finally close the prison there, not re-purposing the facility for offshore immigration.
