US President Donald Trump has announced punitive tariffs and travel bans on Colombia as a consequence of Colombia's refusal to allow landing for US deportation flights. This action, described as just the beginning by Trump, targets Colombia for allegedly violating legal obligations regarding the return of deported individuals. In response, Colombian President Gustavo Petro emphasized the need for dignity in treating migrants, stating that deported Colombians would be received on civilian planes, underscoring the difference between migrants and criminals.
These measures are just the beginning. We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the Criminals they forced into the United States.
A migrant is not a criminal and must be treated with the dignity that a human being deserves. That is why I returned the US military planes that were carrying Colombian migrants.
