In a provocative Oval Office exchange, President Trump toyed with the notion of deploying U.S. military forces in Mexico to combat drug cartels, which he categorized as foreign terrorist organizations. His comments followed a question from Fox News journalist Peter Doocy, indicating a drastic shift in U.S. policy regarding the cartels. Trump claimed drug-related deaths in the U.S. may total 300,000 annually, prompting a firmer stance on collaboration with Mexico. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected Trump's one-sided measures, emphasizing sovereignty and non-interference in national affairs.
Trump's comments came after Fox News' Peter Doocy asked him if he would consider ordering U.S. Special Forces into Mexico to take out the cartels, to which he responded, 'Could happen. Stranger things have happened.' He later reaffirmed a long-desired designation of the cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
'But we have to do what's right. They're killing our people. They're killing 250, 300,000 American people a year, not 100, like has been reported for 15 years,' asserted Trump before signing another executive order.
Trump declared that he spoke to the new president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, stating, 'I was very tough on Mexico. I said to her: You can't do this to our country.'
Sheinbaum expressed her opposition to Trump's action while insisting that 'we do not accept interference in our country.'
