Experts point out that despite efforts from the Trump administration to deregulate and promote fossil fuels, the ongoing accountability lawsuits against the industry are resilient and dynamic, irrespective of political change. Richard Wiles, president of the Center for Climate Integrity, noted that the overwhelming evidence of deception within the fossil fuel sector stands unchanged, highlighting that there are over 30 ongoing lawsuits aimed at holding these companies accountable for misleading the public about climate risks and impacts.
Michael Gerrard of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law emphasized that Trump’s influence on climate accountability litigation chiefly derives from the justices he appointed to the Supreme Court. He noted a particular concern regarding his appointees having ties to the fossil fuel industry, which could significantly affect future litigation as these cases progress through the courts, potentially swaying decisions in favor of the fossil fuel interests and undermining accountability for climate deception.
