A recent report by Transparency International warns that corruption challenges global climate initiatives, with many nations exhibiting lower Corruption Perceptions Index scores. Countries like Brazil, which is set to host COP30, recorded their lowest scores ever, highlighting a troubling trend among climate-vulnerable nations. The report shows that even traditionally leading countries in climate action, such as the United States and Canada, have also seen their scores decline. The findings suggest that a significant portion of the global population resides in countries with high corruption risks, which may severely impact efforts for meaningful climate action moving forward.
"Corruption is obstructing effective climate action by hindering the adoption of ambitious policies," a statement from the watchdog said.
Transparency International CEO Maira Martini stated, "Corrupt forces not only shape but often dictate policies and dismantle checks and balances."
According to Transparency International, "These nations hold the greatest responsibility to lead on ambitious climate goals, reduce emissions at scale and build resilience worldwide."
85% of the global population is living in countries that scored under 50 on the Corruption Perceptions Index, indicating a high risk of public sector corruption.
