David Berson, president and CEO of CBS Sports, described Gumbel as breaking barriers and setting standards, stating he was a tremendous broadcaster and gifted storyteller.
Gumbel made history as the first Black announcer in the US to call play-by-play of a major sports championship during Super Bowl XXXV in 2001.
Over his career, Gumbel hosted major sporting events including the Winter Olympics and directed CBS’ NFL coverage, showing significant influence in football and basketball broadcasting.
