Sainsbury's and Morrisons are reportedly displaying advertisements for heated tobacco devices, such as iQos and Ploom, which Trading Standards claims contravenes a 2002 law prohibiting tobacco advertisement. Both supermarkets argue that the law does not apply to these products, despite concerns from health experts regarding their safety compared to traditional cigarettes and vapes. The Chartered Trading Standards Institute emphasizes the legality remains untested in court. Due to stretched resources, the prevalence of such ads appears to be increasing, raising significant public health concerns, particularly regarding exposure to children.
If you walk into a Sainsbury's or a Morrisons you may well see adverts for iQos, a device that uses an electronic current to heat tobacco.
Heated tobacco is different from vapes, which contain nicotine but no tobacco, and they are much less popular.
