"Typically, people will start to experience the symptoms in the late afternoon, early evening, the time when the sun is setting," Krowel notes about sundowning.
"Episodes can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, and in some cases, can extend into the night," Dr. Diaz explains the variability of sundowning.
"They don't know where they are, where they live, they don't feel safe, which creates an anxiety within them, which can lead to restlessness and irritability," Krowel describes the distress caused by sundowning.
"Sundowning tends to peak in the middle stages of dementia and lessens as the disease progresses," according to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
