The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has returned over $20 billion to consumers, but recent actions by the Trump administration threaten its existence. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who helped create the agency post-2008 financial crisis, argues that only Congress has the authority to shut it down. Warren's concerns involve key figures like Elon Musk and Russ Vought, who are pushing for extensive governmental changes under Project 2025, which could undermine consumer protections. Warren and fellow Democrats are organizing rallies to protest these threats to the CFPB and advocate for consumer rights.
"Congress built the CFPB, and no one other than Congress, not the president, not Musk, not Vought can shut it down," Warren said in a video posted to X.
"If they succeed, CEOs on Wall Street will once again be free to cheat you out of your savings," Warren warned, highlighting the risks posed by dismantling the CFPB.
