This Houston suburb is swapping out driveways for shared front lawns
Briefly

Indigo, a new master-planned community in Katy, Texas, aims to redefine suburban living by emphasizing shared green spaces and family-oriented designs rooted in traditional urban planning. Developed by Meristem Communities, this project replaces conventional driveways with communal parks to promote social interaction and play amongst families. The founding partners, inspired by their own parenting experiences, focus on creating an environment conducive to free-range play. The initiative boosts neighborhood aesthetics, safety, and ecological health while also allowing cost-effective investments in landscaping and amenities. Indigo plans to feature 670 homes, apartments, retail, and recreational facilities within its 235-acre footprint.
We're both dads with young kids, and we want to kick our kids out the door to play like we grew up in the '80s.
The free-range kids movement is happening right now, but not on the development side. That's what we set out to do in many ways.
Trading concrete and asphalt for green space also has other benefits, including reducing the urban heat island effect, boosting resiliency with water-absorbing plants, and improving pedestrian safety.
