The Transportation Security Administration intercepted 6,678 firearms at airport checkpoints last year, representing a small decrease but still reflecting a troubling trend of increasing incidents.
Despite a slight decrease in intercepted firearms, it's alarming that the figure has more than doubled since 2015, highlighting ongoing issues with firearm security at airports.
TSA Administrator David Pekoske emphasized the safety risks firearms pose at checkpoints, stating, 'One firearm at a checkpoint is too many... costly and slows down operations.'
Of the intercepted firearms, 94% were loaded, demonstrating a significant risk not just for airport personnel but for all travelers navigating through security.
