The article discusses the inception and evolution of the Stunt Awards by Vulture, aimed at recognizing outstanding contributions from the stunt profession in cinema. Established in response to the lack of acknowledgment within the Oscars, the awards have celebrated numerous talented individuals across multiple countries. Despite gaining traction and growing recognition, most notably with awards going to the stunt teams of films like John Wick: Chapter 4, the Academy has yet to implement a Best Stunt category by 2025.
When Vulture launched the Stunt Awards three years ago, the goal was simple: If the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences wasn't going to celebrate one of the largest departments in cinema, then we would. The first year honored the best of the stunt world across ten categories and spotlighted professionals from the U.S. and other countries.
By the second edition of our awards, which saw a stunning six of our accolades go to the cast and crew of Chad Stahelski's John Wick: Chapter 4, the Oscars still lacked a Best Stunt category.
