The leader of South Korea's opposition first thought the president's martial law declaration was a deepfake

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law, enabling military control and suspending civil government, the first since democratization in 1987.

After the declaration, opposition leader Lee Jae-myung initially dismissed it as a deepfake, saying, 'That's a deepfake. It has to be a deepfake. There's no way that's real.'

Lee Jae-myung livestreamed his climb over a fence to enter the National Assembly, highlighting the controversial nature of Yoon's martial law and the opposition's resolve.

Following Yoon's martial law declaration, which some viewed as an attempt to suppress resistance, all six opposition parties filed for impeachment, demonstrating increasing dissent.
