The Irish Independent's View: The Government must act sensibly to guide us through economic storms
Briefly

The National Development Plan (NDP) includes a €200bn investment aimed at improving vital infrastructure like housing, water, energy, and transport over the next decade. This investment is crucial due to current inadequacies and the need for modernization. Global uncertainty, including the impact of Donald Trump's tariffs, creates a challenging backdrop for economic projections. The Government's track record on infrastructural projects has been poor, and strategies to enhance procurement and expedite project delivery are necessary to protect taxpayers and ensure successful outcomes.
The €200bn injection contained in the NDP is desperately needed where vital infrastructure is either creaking or utterly inadequate, as well as developing to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
The Government's goal in the NDP is to transform housing, water, energy and transport over the next decade.
While Mr Trump's machinations may well play merry hell with best laid plans, there is much the Government could have done to ring-fence its expenditure.
Dr Paul Davis stated, there are two critical things the Government could do in the area of procurement to safeguard taxpayer money.
