"The Arch has always been one of the world's most significant architectural marvels and an iconic symbol of that midcentury era," says architect Jason Cadorette, senior associate at Cooper Robertson, which worked on a refurbishment project at the arch in 2018. Its stature and design reflect both engineering excellence and cultural significance, demonstrating how a single structure can encapsulate an entire region's identity and its historical context.
"The Gateway Arch represents St. Louis as the 'Gateway to the West,'" says Pam Sanfilippo, program manager of Museum Services & Interpretation at Gateway Arch National Park. The monument serves not just as an architectural point of interest but also as a symbol of ambition and progress, representing the spirit of exploration and the idea of manifest destiny that defined the United States during its formative years.
