The Black Keys experienced tumultuous times in 2024 marked by canceled tour dates and backlash from a controversial performance, leading them to reevaluate their management. In a candid interview, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney criticized the intertwined nature of the music industry's management, ticketing, and promotional sectors, which complicated their ability to prioritize their artistic goals. They fired their management team amid accusations that their interests were undermined by management’s conflicting relationships with ticketing companies, influencing venue choices detrimental to their tour success. Carney highlighted the industry's lack of transparency, limiting artists' freedom.
"The essential thing that we learned here was how many management companies are directly connected to a company that runs every single aspect of promotion in this country," Carney not-so-subtly said of The Black Key's last year.
"We kept having to move shit around for a Manchester show because there was a venue that our management company co-owned and wanted us to play, and it wasn't ready," Carney explained.
