Thanksgiving 2024 is projected to be the busiest travel period on record with 79.9 million Americans traveling 50 miles or more from home, representing an increase of 1.7 million compared to last year and 2 million more than in 2019.
According to AAA and INRIX, the busiest travel days are Tuesday and Wednesday, but optimal travel times are before 10 a.m. on those days and avoiding peak hours, particularly in the afternoon.
The worst travel times to avoid include Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., as these periods will see the highest congestion.
If travelers plan to hit the road during Thanksgiving, they might increase their chances of a smoother journey by choosing their travel times wisely and moving outside highly congested periods.
