In a recent call between Mr. Martin and Mr. Starmer, both leaders expressed their commitment to enhancing Irish-British relations through a series of annual summits beginning in 2025. They discussed the impact of Storm Éowyn and the support provided to ESB by UK crews. The conversation included significant topics like Northern Ireland, legacy issues, and global challenges such as the Ukrainian crisis and humanitarian aid needs in Gaza. They recognized the importance of combating antisemitism and discrimination while preparing for a meeting at the European Council.
We are both committed to making 2025 an important and defining year for Irish-British relations as we initiate a series of annual summits to drive a programme of strategic cooperation between our two countries.
We spoke about Northern Ireland and our shared vision as co-guarantors of the Good Friday Agreement to furthering prosperity and reconciliation to the benefit of all.
We discussed global issues, including Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East, in particular the need for a surge in humanitarian aid to Gaza.
