""Mama, are we going back to Syria now?""
"'You are Syrian, go back.'"
"'You are a part of Germany, we support you'"
Children in German schools and kindergartens are beginning to ask whether their families will return to Syria. Some children are being told "You are Syrian, go back," and many are becoming reluctant to speak Arabic. Other neighbors, initiatives and associations are expressing support and inclusion. Since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, many German politicians have called for Syrians to leave Germany and help rebuild Syria. One parliamentary leader characterized return as a responsibility and a "patriotic duty." Returning to evaluate conditions risks losing protected status, and authorities discourage authorized exploratory trips.
