Councillor Paul Edgeworth voiced concerns regarding the newly installed 17ft digital advertising display on a roundabout, worrying it might distract drivers and contribute to accidents.
Lynn Appleby, a local resident, highlighted the dangers of the digital display, stating "When you go past the roundabout it's a 30...you aren't going to see the signs that are there," emphasizing that bright lights will capture attention.
Sunderland City Council defended the installation by noting that similar screens exist in other regions and assured that a road traffic safety review is part of the approval conditions.
The Smart Media Group, responsible for the screen, stated that they adhered to all procedures and implemented safety measures to mitigate potential distractions for drivers.
