Starbucks' stricter return to office looms amid bitter restructuring
"I don't think I've talked to anybody who has had anything positive to say in response to this change of policy,"
"It does make me reconsider what my long-term plans at Starbucks are."
"We understand not everyone will agree with this approach. We've listened and thought carefully,"
"But as a company built on human connection, and given the scale of the turnaround ahead, we believe this is the right path for Starbucks."
Starbucks increased its return-to-office mandate from three to four days per week and added a manager relocation requirement to Seattle or Toronto by July. The company unveiled a $1 billion restructuring that includes laying off 900 nonretail employees and closing an unspecified number of stores, including at least two Seattle locations. A one-time voluntary exit program with cash was offered for employees who do not want to comply. Many employees expressed concern and reconsideration of their long-term plans. CEO Brian Niccol said the changes are intended to support a large-scale turnaround and human connection.
