Stanford hires former Nike CEO as athletic director
Briefly

John Donahoe has been hired as the athletic director at Stanford, starting September 8. He replaces Bernard Muir, who stepped down. School president Jon Levin praised Donahoe’s vision and strategic acumen for college athletics. Donahoe, an alumnus of Stanford Business School, was previously the CEO of Nike, ServiceNow, and eBay. He aims to enhance Stanford Athletics and focus on student-athlete experiences. Stanford's athletic program is historically successful, having secured NCAA titles for 49 consecutive years. There are hopes to improve performance in football and men's basketball following recent struggles under Muir's leadership.
"Stanford has enormous strengths and enormous potential in a changing environment, including being the model for achieving both academic and athletic excellence at the highest levels," he said. "I can't wait to work in partnership with the Stanford team to build momentum for Stanford Athletics and ensure the best possible experiences for our student-athletes."
"We needed a distinctive leader - someone with the vision, judgment, and strategic acumen for a new era of college athletics, and with a deep appreciation for Stanford's model of scholar-athlete excellence. John embodies these characteristics."
