Regional emergency services reported the mounting toll as rescue workers discovered additional bodies Wednesday in Valencia's flood-ravaged eastern region. The death toll soared to at least 51 individuals.
Authorities prompted residents to take shelter at home and issued red alerts in the eastern Valencia region, with some areas such as Turis and Utiel recording 200 mm of rainfall.
Flash floods swept away cars, disrupted rail service, and interrupted flight operations, leaving parts of Valencia without power, highlighting the severe impact of the storms.
'Yesterday was the worst day of my life,' said Ricardo Gabaldon, the mayor of Utiel. He described the harrowing scene where cars and containers floated down streets as water rose to three meters.
