sordo madaleno to design new collection centre for hungarian museum of natural history
"The Centre's staff are stewards of the objects, and the architecture becomes an extension of that stewardship. Within this layered ecology of care, the object is framed not as an isolated artefact but as an embodiment of life-worlds and landscapes that nourish reciprocal relationships,"
"Our building reflects this mutuality, providing a space of unity between conservator, stakeholder, architecture, and environment."
Sordo Madaleno, working with építész stúdió and Buro Happold, won an international competition to design the 43,000-square-meter New Collection Centre for the Hungarian Museum of Natural History in Debrecen. The scheme prioritizes conservation, research, and long-term scientific stewardship, framing objects as embodiments of life-worlds and landscapes. A defining element is a layered brick façade produced from soils sourced across Hungary, creating tonal variations that reference geological history and the museum's disciplinary scope. The monolithic, horizontally oriented structure integrates with Debrecen's low-lying landscape and supports the museum's relocation to the edge of the city's Great Forest amid urban and academic expansion. The project represents the practice's first European cultural commission and a new scientific hub for the expanding museum landscape.
