SoCal wildfire disaster sparks interest in Bay Area emergency preparedness classes
Briefly

"It's very important, because when this disaster is occurring, you're not going to remember where your dad's gold watch is," said Carrie Dovzak. Dovzak emphasized the need for preparedness during emergencies, noting that in the heat of the moment, people tend to forget crucial items, underscoring the necessity for planning ahead. The goal of the CERT class is to ensure that participants are well-prepared and aware of essential actions required during emergencies, especially for wildfires.
"I think the big difference is everybody knows someone from LA. It's really affected the people of Berkeley, knowing it could happen here," Dovzak said. This comment reflects the heightened awareness and concern among Berkeley residents due to the ongoing wildfire crisis in Southern California, making local communities more motivated to prepare for possible similar disasters.
"People who take these classes talk about how they don't want to evacuate willy-nilly, but sometimes you have to get into that mindset. If you see smoke, and you feel vulnerable, I would say go visit your friends in the city, just get out of harm's way," Dovzak stated. This advice highlights the importance of being proactive in evacuation decisions, encouraging individuals to prioritize safety when faced with wildfire threats.
"Open up the closets, look at your clothes, go to the kitchen look at all your plates," Dovzak advised regarding how to prepare for a potential disaster. This underscores the importance of assessing belongings for insurance purposes and ensuring essential items are accounted for in the event of an emergency.
