Smithsonian Institution and US National Gallery of Art shutter diversity offices following President Trump's executive order
Briefly

On January 20, the day of his inauguration, President Donald Trump signed an executive order targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs within federal agencies. This order is described as labeling these initiatives "illegal and immoral," resulting in the shutdown of DEI offices and adjustments in federal-funded institutions like the Smithsonian and the National Gallery of Art. Both agencies have redefined their core values, have frozen hiring, and reshaped their diversity programs, emphasizing different terminologies while maintaining similar operational functions.
The Smithsonian's accessibility programmes for visitors with disabilities have been renamed but remain the same. Lonnie G. Bunch III, secretary of the Smithsonian, announced these changes in an internal email to staff.
The NGA made its decision late last week. The museum also removed the words "diversity", "equity", "inclusion" and "access" from its list of values.
