The Knocksink Wood Education Centre's project led to an impressive increase in tern nests from 22 in 2023 to around 62 in 2024, demonstrating effective conservation efforts.
With the erection of 1,100 meters of electrified predator fencing and public information signs, the project not only protected local bird populations but also educated the community on wildlife preservation.
Daily monitoring by eight NPWS staff and collaboration with Birdwatch Ireland and local farmers emphasized the community's commitment to preserving the Little Tern and other ground nesting species.
Despite challenges like weather-related nest losses, the project successfully highlighted the importance of conservation, engaging local residents and planning future education initiatives in schools.
