The siblings, ages 18 and 20, fell into Lincoln Brook during their hike, leading to hypothermia as they tried to set up camp for the night.
Authorities stressed the importance of being prepared: 'Before setting out, all hikers should pack the ten essentials: map, compass, warm clothing, extra food and water...'
Using a Garmin inReach, the siblings contacted Dartmouth Outdoor Programs, recognizing that they were experiencing early signs of hypothermia after falling into the brook.
Conservation officials noted that the siblings were 'well prepared with equipment' but still faced dangers posed by winter conditions in the mountains.
