California Governor Gavin Newsom recently approved a $2.5 billion wildfire relief package aimed at rapid rebuilding in Los Angeles. Both he and Mayor Karen Bass plan to bypass certain regulations to expedite reconstruction. However, experts warn that this approach risks repeating past mistakes, as many areas remain highly flammable. Environmental historian Char Miller criticized this strategy, noting that a lack of pause could lead to cyclical disasters. Stephanie Pincetl questioned the rationale behind significant public spending to rebuild in vulnerable locations, advocating for a reevaluation of building strategies in Los Angeles.
"You're going to build and you're going to burn." Char Miller points out that without major changes, rebuilding in wildfire-prone areas only leads to repeated disasters.
Stephanie Pincetl stated, "there are lots of reasons to consider whether or not the public... should be spending billions of dollars to fight these fires..." highlighting the financial impracticality of rebuilding in dangerous zones.
