Sheriff Christina Corpus' childcare center and substation plans are stalled due to budget issues, highlighting a significant oversight in county spending and planning.
County Executive Mike Callagy questioned the sheriff's budget management, stating, 'The sheriff's office's budget surplus has shrunk from a healthy $33 million reserve to only $3 million, which falls below the reserve threshold required.'
Gretchen Spiker, the sheriff's spokeswoman, noted, 'It is normal practice to budget one-time capital and technology projects in fund balance,' addressing the decline in reserves.
With the headquarters project nearing completion, Spiker expressed optimism, stating, 'We are confident in our ability to build our reserves back up to the recommended levels.'
