A 61-year-old surfer in Maui suffered a severe shark bite that resulted in the complete severance of his right leg just below the knee.
Authorities reported the surfer was alert during treatment on the beach before being transported to Maui Memorial in critical condition.
Following the attack, officials closed Waiehu Beach Park and issued a warning to avoid the waters within a mile radius until further notice.
