SF group purchases land near Russian River for $24 million
Briefly

Save the Redwoods League plans to purchase 1,517 acres of forest near the Russian River for $24 million, filling a crucial gap in protected land that spans 34 square miles. The acquisition links Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park and Sonoma Coast State Park, enhancing habitat corridors. Most of the land has been timbered for over a century, but it also holds some old-growth trees, including the notable "decadence tree." Future plans include transferring the land to Sonoma County Regional Parks for public recreation access.
"The property really makes a connection from the town of Monte Rio all the way to the ocean and also is a fantastic corridor for habitat movement," said Jeff Stump, the league's director of land protection.
"It's an exciting near-term future opportunity for the public to get onto this land and to enjoy this forest and its trails," Stump said.
