The Service Employees International Union is rejoining the AFL-CIO after two decades, hoping a united labor movement can better tackle challenges faced by workers seeking union membership.
Both AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler and SEIU President April Verrett emphasized that the decision to reunite was not a reaction to Donald Trump's presidency but rather a strategic move to amplify their collective voice.
Shuler stated, "We are amassing our forces, building our strength and our power before the inauguration... Working people will continue to demand that our voices be heard."
President Joe Biden praised the merger, stating it would enable workers to organize effectively, earn better wages, receive improved benefits, and ensure retirement security.
