Royal Navy tracks Russian spy ship' closely after it enters UK waters
Briefly

The Royal Navy monitored a Russian spy ship, the Yantar, which entered UK waters and raised alarms over potential threats to undersea infrastructure. Defence Secretary John Healey highlighted the vessel's mapping mission, linking it to Russian efforts to undermine European security, particularly concerning critical cables for oil, gas, electricity, and internet. This marks the second time within three months the Yantar has been detected in UK waters, following a troubling precedent where it loitered over key infrastructure in November. Healey reassured Parliament about the military’s close tracking capabilities against such threats.
The Yantar was first picked up 45 miles off the British coast, well inside the UK's exclusive economic zone.
Healey accused Putin of trying to threaten European security by targeting undersea infrastructure.
The submarine had been ordered to surface close to the Yantar to make clear that we had been covertly monitoring its every move.
