A shooting incident involving Richmond police is being investigated by the California Attorney General due to its fatal outcome during a confrontation with a domestic violence suspect. After a 32-minute standoff near a railroad right of way, officers shot the suspect who was wanted for probation violations. Although officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, the suspect did not comply, reportedly brandishing an object identified initially as a knife but later revealed to be a knife sheath. The AG’s office and county DA are now reviewing the incident.
Officers spent approximately 32 minutes attempting to de-escalate the situation and reach a peaceful resolution; at approximately 8:53 p.m., an officer-involved shooting occurred, leading to the subject's fatal injuries.
The department says that officers had been attempting to locate a man who was wanted for a probation violation related to a domestic violence incident.
During the standoff, the suspect wielded an object that appeared to be a knife, ignoring multiple commands to drop it.
The California Department of Justice's Special Prosecutions Section is now conducting an independent review of the shooting, while the Contra Costa County DA's office is also investigating.
