In East Hampton, local authorities have asserted that they do not enforce immigration laws, reassuring residents that undocumented workers will be protected. Chief Jeffrey Erickson highlighted that police lack federal enforcement authority, and local leaders like Councilwoman Cate Rogers emphasize ongoing discussions about community support. Critics argue this stance is more about virtue signaling than actual concern, given the lack of ICE activity in the area. The discourse reflects broader tensions around immigration policy and local responses amidst national debates.
Under President Trump, ICE has been arresting illegal immigrants who have committed crimes like rape, murder and assault yet were inexplicably allowed to stay in the country.
It's enormously popular with the American public. So to paint Trump as the bad guy, Democrats have to lie about what he's doing.
"I want to assure everyone that this is the beginning of a conversation. It's not a one-and-done statement, 'Okay, we did our job, let's move on,'" said Councilwoman Cate Rogers.
"I haven't seen an ICE agent in this town in I can't tell you how long," East Hampton Town Police Chief Michael Sarlo admits.
