Three candidates have been nominated via the Oireachtas route: Catherine Connolly, Heather Humphreys and Jim Gavin. No independent candidate has yet secured the backing of 20 TDs or senators required for an Oireachtas nomination. Several local authorities — Roscommon, Longford, Cork City, Galway City and Dublin City councils — have chosen not to nominate a candidate. Independent contenders are actively canvassing local councillors to obtain the four council nominations needed to appear on the ballot. MMA fighter Conor McGregor withdrew from the race on Monday morning after planning to attempt the council route.
