"I request the (government) of Uganda to release my husband Dr, Kizza Besigye, from where he is being held immediately," Winnie Byanyima stated, emphasizing the urgency for the Ugandan government to intervene in her husband’s detention.
"I am now reliably informed that he is in a military jail in Kampala," Byanyima expressed, reflecting her deep concern over the conditions of Besigye's detention, highlighting the questionable nature of holding a civilian in a military prison.
Attorney Erias Lukwago confirmed, "his client would appear in court for an initial hearing later Wednesday," which raised alarms about the legal proceedings that Besigye would face in the military court, questioning their fairness.
Besigye, a trained physician and former ally of Museveni, has faced severe repercussions for his outspoken criticism, especially against Uganda’s anti-homosexuality law, revealing the tense political climate in Uganda that stifles dissent.
