Prepare for worst ahead of NI red weather alert, says DFM
Briefly

All schools across the island of Ireland are to close on Friday due to red weather warnings issued ahead of Storm Eowyn. The Met Office reported serious risks to life, prompting Northern Ireland's first minister to advise remote work where possible. Essential safety precautions, including remote learning plans for students and emergency alerts by authorities, are being implemented to mitigate risks associated with the storm. Educational institutions like Queen's University Belfast are also closing, marking a rare weather-related closure, the last being during Hurricane Ophelia in 2017.
The Northern Ireland warning will be in effect from 07:00 until 14:00 GMT on Friday, with the Met Office advising schools to implement remote learning.
Education Minister Paul Givan said the school closures were essential to protect the safety of children and staff from potential risk to life.
First Minister Michelle O'Neill emphasized the seriousness of the situation, urging the public to heed warnings and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
Emergency alerts will be dispatched to warn the public, with further updates expected following a press conference regarding Storm Eowyn.
