A regional passenger jet, American Eagle Flight 5342, collided with a Black Hawk helicopter while approaching Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. With no survivors found among the 64 onboard, rescue operations faced challenges from cold temperatures and strong winds. The helicopter, participating in a training exercise, was based out of Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Approximately 300 responders were involved in the search efforts, which were complicated by the treacherous conditions of the Potomac River. U.S. officials confirmed fatalities but no indications of foul play were present in the investigation.
"We know there are fatalities, but did not provide further details," U.S. Senator Ted Cruz stated regarding the incident involving the regional passenger jet and military helicopter.
Washington DC fire chief John Donnelly noted the challenges of the rescue operations: "There is wind, there [are] pieces of ice out there, so it's just dangerous and hard to work in."
