Paul Reubens achieved significant success as Pee-wee Herman throughout the 1980s, highlighted by his Emmy-winning show, "Pee-wee's Playhouse," and two successful films. Despite personal challenges and a struggle with his public image after a 1991 arrest, Reubens revealed many private aspects of his life in a posthumous documentary. Throughout his career, he kept his sexuality private, but he shared his story in the documentary to combat misconceptions about his identity and mortality, articulating a deeper understanding of himself after years of scrutiny. The HBO documentary is set to be released later this year.
More than anything, the reason I wanted to make a documentary was for people to see who I really am, and how painful and dreadful it was to be labeled something I wasn't.
Death is just so final. To be able to get your message in at the last minute, at some point, is incredible.
